300 short of number#1

Monday August 16th, 2010 in Blog | No Comments »

As we prepare for another season of NBL action, I’d like to set a goal to all basketball fans across Western Australia for the next 12 months – and that is simply to be Number#1.

Before you think I’m being unrealistic, I’d like you to consider some statistics.

Nationally, basketball is the third most participated sport. In Victoria it’s number one. In NSW it ranks second.

(Statistics based on Participation in Exercise, Recreation and Sport 2009).

Here in WA we rank second too, but most importantly netball, which is number one, has a meagre 300 more participants than us.

The Sport of Politics

electionI love politics. How could I not, being born in the world largest democracy – India.

I took great interest when growing up there and enjoyed a good election campaign both here in Australia and during my brief working trips in the US.

Whilst in the Western world, governments do all they can to get people to vote, even mandating it in Australia, the opposite is true in India.

There the focus is to ensure people don’t vote twice. Given the 1.2 billion people an electoral roll is impossible. Hell it’s hard enough trying to count the number of people let alone the task of getting everyone’s name and address – even with the number of IT experts.
