Drugs in Sport

Friday March 23rd, 2007 in Blog | Comments Off

24 positive drug tests out of 750 players in the AFL over the last 18 months suggests they have a problem. 3.2% of their players take drugs. I’m not sure if this is reflective of the general population, but I would doubt it.
The question is whether a professional sporting team can afford to either fine or sack a player because of drug use – irrespective of their seniority, contribution, importance or profile?
There is also a player welfare issue associated with the responsibility of having long-term addicts on your team.
Until every club can proactively deal with the issue in such a drastic way, there will always be drugs in sport to varying levels.

Time to Think

druckerPeter Drucker, one of the world’s foremost thinkers on the science of leadership and management talked about the need for managers to take time to think.

He said it wasn’t very often that you walk past a manager’s office and find him thinking…yet, that is one of his key functions.

Whilst I’m a strong advocate of Dr Drucker, I have failed to follow his advice on this account.

Last weekend our family including my wife’s parents went down to the south of Perth for a brief holiday (3 days) and amidst the surfing, board games and wine tasting, I managed to get some time to myself to think about life, work and the topic of management and leadership.
